In this chapter, students will be learning about three early English settlements. Although the earliest English settlers came for may different reasons (ranging from finding a better life to finding wealth to finding religious freedom), they all faced many challenges by being in a new and unfamiliar environment. The first English settlement we will discuss is that of Roanoke, near present-day North Carolina in 1587. Next, we will look at the settlement at Jamestown, in present-day Virginia in 1607. Finally, we will examine the settlement at Plymouth, located in present-day Massachusetts in 1620. Throughout chapter 6, the students will debate the reasons why certain settlements succeeded while others did not. Evidence such as leadership, resources, and Native American relations will help to support students' arguments. Chapter 6 will wrap up with the students learning about the tensions between Native Americans and settlers during King Philip's War in 1675. By the end of the chapter, all students should be able to answer the following question: What challenges faced the first English colonies?
