In this chapter, we will read the stories of eight explorers: Christopher Columbus, John Cabot, Juan Ponce de León, Hernán Cortés, Jacques Cartier, Francisco Coronado, Henry Hudson, and Robert de La Salle. We will take a closer look at the sponsor of each explorer as well as their dates of exploration. As a class, we will discuss each explorer's motivation(s) for traveling to the New World and uncover the impacts the explorers made on not only the land and native people but also our own lives. We will conclude the chapter by learning about Spain and France's battle for the control of Florida and the outcome. By the end of the chapter, all students should be able to answer the following question: How did exploration of the Americas lead to settlement?
