In this chapter, students will be learning about the debate between Patriots and Loyalists over the issue of independence leading up to the drafting of the Declaration of Independence. We will learn which famous historical figures were Patriots or Loyalists. Specifically, we will read about Thomas Hutchinson (Loyalist), Jonathan Boucher (Loyalist), Lord Dunmore (Loyalist), Benjamin Franklin (Patriot), Samuel Adams (Patriot), and Mercy Otis Warren (Patriot). Students will study one historical figure in depth with their social studies group and participate in a whole class debate where they will step into the shoes of their historical figure. We will end our study on the debate between loyalists and patriots by reading a speech by Patrick Henry and crafting rally cries for independence. By the end of the chapter, all students should be able to answer the chapter focus question: What were the arguments for and against colonial independence from Great Britain?
