In this chapter, we will be exploring the reasons behind early European exploration to the Americas. We will examine eight artifacts found onboard a sunken European ship. Through the text and clues found on the ship, we will predict what these artifacts might be and why the Europeans used these artifacts. Using those eight artifacts, we will categorize them into three groups: motives for exploration, new technology that helped exploration, and new products found in the Americas. We will also look at the religious conflicts occuring in Europe and figure out how those conflicts helped spur European exploration. By the end of the chapter, all students should be able to answer the following question: What did explorers take to and from the New World during the Age of Exploration?
