In this chapter, we will be acting as a zoom lens on a camera. We will start by looking at the bigger picture and then zooming in on a specific group of Native Americans. The students will explore the theories scientists have about how the first Americans settled in North America and South America. We will look at migration routes the Native Americans took and discuss the four environments in which they settled - grasslands, deserts, mountains, and Arctic ice fields. A key theme for this chapter is how the first Americans adapted to their environment. Our reading will provide us with opportunities to read the Hopis' origin story and take a closer look at the lives of the Inuit people living in the Arctic region.
