In this chapter, students will be learning about the drafting of the Declaration of Independence. We will discuss the events that led up to the meeting of the Second Continental Congress on May 10, 1775 in Philadelphia. We will also take a closer look at the selection of Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence with the help of four other patriots on his committee. Students will learn about Thomas Paine's Common Sense and other patriot efforts that pushed for separation from Great Britain. Five excerpts from the Declaration of Independence will be analyzed and translated into language all fifth graders can understand. We will conclude the chapter by discussing the excitement surrounding the approval of the historical document. By the end of the chapter, all students should be able to answer the chapter focus question: What are the main ideas in the Declaration of Independence?
